Ministerial Opening for Steetley Learning Zone

The Learning Zone at Steetley, Laing ORourke's state-of-the-art concrete manufacturing facility,  was honoured by VIP visitors on Tuesday 11 November, when Sion Simon MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Department for Innovation, Universities & Skills, dropped in to formally open the educational facility. He was joined during the visit by local MP John Mann.

Commenting to a local radio station at the event, Sion Simon said, ”Laing O’Rourke is a company that takes its responsibilities seriously, and I’m very pleased to see the investment it is making in education, and the manufacturing facility.”  On the site of the former colliery, quarry and brickworks, Laing O’Rourke has treated the heavy contamination legacy of the old workings, and is currently building a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, which will create up to 270 new jobs once open.    

The Learning Zone is an onsite teaching facility that provides bespoke accommodation and technical resources for use by students enabling them to study in a classroom environment whilst observing site activity from a safe environment. The experience reveals the variety of roles which exist in our industry and the activities undertaken in the construction process.
